Communications Marketing

Geoff Danker Hi, I'm Geoffrey Danker. I've been in the Web design and development business for about a decade now and boy have things changed! When I started this journey, Web pages were made using straight HTML and a few images that had to be small so they could be displayed as quick as possible over 15.5 baud modems. Companies scrambled to put up web sites that didn't do much other than tout their message.

These days we have the luxury of broadband connections, streaming video, RSS feeds, Flash modules and a whole world of online applications and widgets. But the big story, the paradigm shift, is in the way people are using the Web. The Web is now a vehicle for instant and powerful communication. It's powerful because the communication is both widespread and targeted. Conversations are going on. Word of mouth recommendations are the norm.

With the maturing of Web 2.0 the way we online marketers operate has had to mature as well. The old paradigm had us putting up our web pages and leaving it at that. We marketed to our public. The banner we operated under was Marketing and Communications.

Communications Marketing
Nowadays, consumers have much more power over the messages they see and they also have the ultimate power of getting their thoughts and opinions out to millions of people at lightning speed! No longer are businesses able to force feed their message to the masses and leave it at that. There is a very real Communication Loop that can simply not be ignored. We are now engaged with consumers. We are in a continuous conversation with them. We are not in Marketing and Communications anymore. We are engaged in Communications Marketing.
